How to auto reply to Instagram comments
You post a Reel, it does well, and 300 people comment asking for the link. Answering them by hand is a part-time job. Auto-replying to comments fixes this, and setting it up takes less time than answering the first ten comments manually.
What you need first
Two requirements, both non-negotiable because Meta's API enforces them:
- A professional Instagram account. Creator or Business, either works. Personal accounts can't use the messaging API at all. Switching is free, in Instagram settings, and takes a minute.
- A Facebook Page linked to that account. Meta's API access runs through the Page connection. If you've never linked one, Instagram will walk you through creating one during setup.
No tool, ours included, can skip these. Any product claiming to automate a personal account is doing it by logging in as you, which is the kind of automation that gets accounts blocked.
Two kinds of comment replies
Worth being precise, because tools blur these together:
- Public comment reply. Your account replies in the comment thread, visible to everyone. Good for social proof ("Sent you a DM!").
- Private reply. A DM sent to the commenter, triggered by their comment. This is the one that actually delivers your link. Meta allows one private reply per comment through the API.
The strongest setups use both: a short public reply so other viewers see the trigger works, plus the private DM carrying the payload.
Setting it up in autoreplyig
- Connect your account. Sign in at autoreplyig, connect Instagram through Facebook Login. You approve specific permissions through Meta's own consent screen; we never see your password.
- Create a comment rule. Choose the post (or all posts), then set your trigger keyword. "LINK", "GUIDE", "PRICE", whatever you'll tell people to comment.
- Write the DM. Keep it short, deliver what was promised immediately, and attach a link card if you're sending people somewhere.
- Optional: set the public reply. One line, varied phrasing if you like ("Check your DMs!").
- Turn it on and test. Comment the keyword from another account. The DM should arrive within seconds.
That's the entire process. The same flow works in ManyChat with more steps, if you've picked that route; the tool comparison covers who fits where.
Keyword choices that work
A few things we've learned from watching thousands of these rules run:
- One word beats a phrase. People typo phrases. "GUIDE" outperforms "send me the guide" as a trigger because exact matching is unforgiving.
- Say the keyword in the content itself. On-screen text in the Reel plus the caption. People comment what they just read.
- Avoid words people use naturally. If your trigger is "price" on a product post, you'll also DM people who wrote "the price is too high." Sometimes that's fine. Know it'll happen.
- Case shouldn't matter. autoreplyig matches regardless of case. If your tool doesn't, that's a problem, because nobody types consistently.
Mind the limits
Instagram's messaging window rules apply to comment-triggered DMs: you get one private reply per comment, and if the person replies to your DM, a 24-hour window opens for normal conversation. Past that window, you can't message them again until they interact again. Details in Instagram DM limits.
Don't send follow-up sequences to people who never replied to your first DM. The API blocks most of this anyway, but tools that find workarounds are putting your account at risk for spam flags.
What results to expect
Comment triggers convert well because intent is explicit: the person asked for the thing. Typical pattern we see is 60 to 90 percent of trigger comments opening the DM, and click-through on the link card landing well above bio-link click rates for the same offer. Your numbers depend on your audience and what you're delivering, but the mechanism beats "link in bio" for one structural reason: the link arrives in their inbox instead of asking them to go find it.
Once comments are automated, the same keyword mechanic works on story replies, which is usually the next thing worth setting up.
