Instagram DM automation for Shopify sellers
Most Shopify sellers already know the pattern: you post a product, the comments fill up with "price?" and "link?", and by the time you reply, the person has scrolled past three other brands. Comment automation exists to close that gap in seconds instead of hours.
Here's the setup that actually moves product, and the parts people get wrong.
Why comments beat bio links for product drops
A bio link works fine for browsing. It's the wrong tool for a specific post about a specific product, because whoever clicks it lands on your homepage or a generic Linktree, not the item they just saw. They have to search again, and a lot of them won't bother.
Comment-triggered DMs skip that step. Someone comments "want," you send them a direct link to that exact product page, and the gap between "I want this" and "here's how to buy it" is one message.
The setup for a single-product post
- Post the product with a caption that tells people what to type. "Comment SHOP and I'll send you the link" works better than "link in bio," because it gives them an action instead of a destination.
- Set a keyword trigger for "shop," plus obvious variants like "want" and "price," pointing at the same automation.
- The automated DM should go straight to the product page URL, not your store's homepage. Every extra click between comment and cart is a chance to lose the sale.
This is the same mechanic covered in our comment-to-DM playbook, applied to a checkout link instead of a lead magnet.
Drops and restocks: where automation actually pays for itself
Manual replies fall apart hardest during a drop. A hundred comments land in the first ten minutes, half of them "is this still available," and by the time a human answers, the size or color is gone and you're managing angry replies instead of sales.
Automation doesn't get overwhelmed by volume. Whether five people or five hundred comment "restock" in the same minute, every one gets the same link at the same speed. That said, automation can't tell you if you're actually out of stock. Pair the DM with a live inventory link on your own site, not a static message that keeps promising a sold-out item.
Set the automated reply to link directly to the product variant, not the collection page. "Comment BLUE for the blue one" beats making people scroll through twelve colors to find what they asked about.
Discount codes without the coupon-code chaos
Posting a discount code in your caption means everyone sees it, including people who were never going to buy and are only there for the code. Sending it by DM after a comment keeps the offer attached to actual engagement, and gives you a rough read on how many people the promo reached versus how many redeemed it.
The tradeoff: DMs only reach people who comment within Instagram's messaging window, covered in detail in our post on DM limits. You can't cold-blast a code to your whole follower list this way, and that's by design. It also means you won't get flagged for mass messaging, which is the bigger risk with tools that don't respect that window.
What this doesn't replace
Automation is good at one job: turning "I want this" into a link, instantly, at any volume. It's bad at handling actual customer service, order status questions, or anything that needs a real answer. Route those to your support inbox or a human reply. Trying to script your way through a return dispute in an auto-DM just frustrates people faster.
Getting started
If you're running a Shopify store off an Instagram account with a decent comment volume, the setup above takes about fifteen minutes: pick your keyword, paste the product link, post. autoreplyig runs this on Meta's official messaging API, so it works inside Instagram's actual rate limits and messaging windows instead of around them, which matters more once a post starts getting real traffic. Set up your first automation and try it on your next product drop.
Try this on your own account
autoreplyig turns Instagram comments, DMs and story replies into automated conversations. Free to start, takes about two minutes to connect.
