Is AI auto-reply on Instagram safe? What to check before turning it on

"Safe" covers two different questions. One is whether Instagram will object. The other is whether the AI will say something you would not.

Risk one: Instagram's rules

AI does not change what Meta permits. The same limits apply to an AI reply as to a keyword reply:

• You can only message people who contacted you first.
• A DM reply must happen within the 24-hour messaging window.
• Comment-triggered private replies are limited to one per comment, within seven days.

Risk two: what it says

This is the one you control. A well-built AI reply:

• Answers only from a document you wrote, not general knowledge.
• Declines to guess. If the document does not say, it says it is not sure.
• Is short. Long answers have more room to be wrong.
• Is capped. A daily limit bounds both cost and the damage from a mistake.
• Is opt-in. Nothing runs until you enable it.

A pre-launch checklist

1. Put anything with legal or money consequences in the document verbatim: prices, refund terms, delivery windows.
2. Add a tone note that names topics to avoid ("never discuss refunds, say I'll follow up").
3. Use the test box with ten real questions, including ones the document cannot answer.
4. Set a low daily limit for the first week.
5. Read what it actually sent. Fix the document where it was vague.

What AI should not do on your behalf

Do not rely on AI for anything that needs a human decision: disputes, medical or financial advice, exceptions to a policy. The right behavior is a handoff, and your document should say so.
