Free ManyChat alternatives that actually work

Alternatives

ManyChat's free plan is real, but it has a ceiling most people hit faster than expected: 1,000 contacts. Every unique person who triggers any of your automations becomes a contact and stays one. One well-performing Reel with a comment trigger can burn through the whole allowance in days, and then your automations stop until you upgrade or prune contacts by hand.

So "free" on ManyChat really means "free until something works." Here's what else is out there.

What free tiers actually include

ToolFree tierThe catch
autoreplyigComment, story and DM automationInstagram only, by design
ManyChatUp to 1,000 contacts, basic featuresContacts accumulate; viral post = paywall
SendPulseUp to 500 chatbot subscribers, 3 botsSubscriber cap, branding on messages
Meta's own inboxSaved replies, FAQs in the appManual only, no keyword triggers on comments

The option everyone forgets: Meta's built-in tools

Before paying anyone (including us), check what Instagram gives you for free. Professional accounts get saved replies and a frequently-asked-questions feature in the inbox. Business accounts connected to Meta Business Suite also get basic away messages.

What you can't do with built-in tools: trigger a DM from a comment, auto-respond to story replies, or send link cards. That gap is the entire reason third-party tools exist. If you don't need those, stop reading and use the free stuff.

autoreplyig's free tier

Our product, our bias, stated up front. autoreplyig is free to start and doesn't count contacts, so the viral-post-hits-paywall problem doesn't exist. You set keyword rules for comments, stories, and DMs, and they run. The limitation is scope: Instagram only. If you need WhatsApp too, we're not your tool.

The typical switch story we hear: someone's ManyChat trial automation worked, their audience grew, and the contact bill arrived. If that's you, the full ManyChat pricing breakdown explains exactly where the costs come from.

SendPulse's free tier

500 subscribers across up to 3 bots, covering Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram. Genuinely useful if you need multiple channels for free. The builder is clunkier than ManyChat's and the free tier puts SendPulse branding on some touchpoints, but it works.

What about the "free forever" bots on sketchy sites?

There's a category of free tools that automate Instagram by logging in as you, with your password, and driving the app like a human would. These are the tools that get accounts action-blocked. Instagram detects login patterns and behavior that don't look human, and the penalties land on your account, not the tool.

The rule is simple: if it asks for your Instagram password, close the tab. Legitimate tools connect through Facebook Login and Meta's official API. We wrote more about the difference in what Meta actually allows in DM automation.

Our honest recommendation

  1. Need zero automation triggers? Use Instagram's built-in saved replies. Free, official, fine.
  2. Need comment-to-DM or story automation on Instagram? Start with autoreplyig or ManyChat's free tier and see which model fits. Ours doesn't cap contacts; theirs includes more channels.
  3. Need multi-channel for free? SendPulse's 500-subscriber tier is the most generous multi-platform option.

Free tiers are marketing, ours included. The real question is what happens to the price the month your content finally takes off. Read the fine print on contact counting before you build on any of them.
