The pricing lever nobody explains upfront

Almost every tool in this space prices on one of two models: number of unique contacts who've triggered an automation, or number of messages sent per month. Contact-based pricing is the more common one, and it's also the one that bites people, because a contact is usually anyone who's ever triggered any automation, and that number only goes up. It doesn't reset when someone stops engaging.

What you're actually paying for at each size

Under a few hundred contacts, most tools are free or close to it, and the differences between plans barely matter yet. This is the range where the free tier of almost anything is fine.

Once you're regularly clearing a thousand or so unique commenters and DMs a month, contact-based tools start charging real money, usually somewhere in the $15 to $50 monthly range depending on the tool and tier. This is also the range where it's worth checking whether a tool prices on contacts at all, because the alternative (flat pricing or usage-based pricing that isn't contact-locked) can be meaningfully cheaper if your audience is large but your automation usage per person is light.

Above that, pricing gets tool-specific enough that a general number stops being useful. At that scale, you're negotiating or looking at higher tiers regardless of which platform you pick, and the real question shifts from "what's the price" to "what happens to the price the month a post goes viral."

The feature you're probably not using

A lot of the price difference between tiers is broad chatbot building: multi-step flows, conditional logic trees, integrations with a dozen CRMs, multi-channel support across Messenger, WhatsApp, and Telegram in addition to Instagram. If your actual use case is "someone comments a keyword, they get a DM with a link," you're paying for a lot of surface area you'll never touch.

This is worth checking directly against your own use case before comparing sticker prices: two tools priced identically can represent very different value if one is a general chatbot platform and the other is built specifically for the comment-to-DM pattern you actually use.

Free tiers are real, but read what counts as a contact

Free plans exist across most of this category, and they're genuinely usable for smaller accounts. The thing to check before committing content strategy to a free tier: does a single viral post risk blowing past the contact cap in one weekend? If yes, you're not choosing a free tool, you're choosing a tool that becomes a paid tool the first time your content works.
